Private Education Cost Surges 55%
Kim Seung-hee, a 45-year-old small business owner living in Seoul, earns about 5 to 5.5 million won each month. Of that, he spends upwards of 1 million won ($867) on his children’s education.
Kim’s daughter and son are in their second and first year of junior high, respectively. They learn English and mathematics from private tutors, which cost Kim a total of 800,000 won each month. When combined with expenses for books and school tuition fees, and other expenses, Kim’s spending on his children’s education easily reaches 1 million won a month.
