Teaching Listening: Using the Model of the Skilled Learner to Help All Learners

I. Introduction

The focus of this paper are the strategies involved in teaching listening, to Korean middle school students in an ESL context. Problems learners have at the three phases of listening are outlined and some metacognative and socio-affective strategies are suggested to overcome these issues.

It is this author’s contention that in providing and teaching the use of strategies, teachers are equipping learners with a set of tools that they can not only use when faced with tasks in the classroom, but also in situations outside the classroom, thus contributing to learner’s ongoing autonomy.
