School Discipline Goes into Tailspin

Public education is fraying at the seams, statistics show, with middle school students’ behavior in class deteriorating into chaos, and the number of students reading books irrelevant to what is being taught in class on a stellar rise.

Sung Ki-sun, a professor in education at the Catholic University, compared and analyzed a 1988 longitudinal study of 2,399 middle school students in 20 schools in Seoul by the College of Education, Seoul National University, and a 2008 study by the Korean Educational Development Institute of 1,216 middle school students in 26 schools in Seoul.
