Organization Seeks to Help Foreign Teachers

April 7, 2009

Though it started in tragedy, the Association for Teachers of English in Korea wants to bring hope to expats.

It was during the media coverage surrounding Bill Kapoun, an English teacher from the United States who was fatally injured in an apartment fire in February 2008, that future ATEK president Tom Rainey-Smith became acquainted with Jason Thomas, who now serves as the group’s vice president and membership director.

Shortly thereafter, they were joined by Tony Hellmann, ATEK’s communications director. Now, a little more than a year later, ATEK appears to be on the verge of introducing a fund that will help teachers with medical expenses they cannot afford. The fund – prompted by the deaths of both Kapoun and Nerine Viljoen, a South African teacher who died after an apartment fire last fall – is to be backed financially by the Korea Exchange Bank.
