Mom School Warns about Overreliance on Hagwon

Park Mi-gyeong was stumped by the question. “Have you ever thought about the happiness of your child?” Seo Hyung-sook, the principal of Mom School, asked her.

Park, whose son was in fifth grade at the time, was visiting Seo at Mom School in central Seoul in March 2007.

The school tries to teach mothers how to raise school-aged children by cutting back on private education. Since second grade, Park’s son Yeh-hun had attended nearly a dozen hagwon, a private educational academy, for piano, taekwondo, singing, drawing and English classes.
